In early morning hours 735 Kaiser employees walked out at the Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Co plant on Wood Street as negotiations with Local 339 of the United Rubber Workers stalled. The union rejected a wage offer that would raise pay 30 cents per hour over three years and a pension boost. management argued wages already top New England, and a strike ensued. A mediation group signaled possible talks soon as unions and bosses planned a mass meeting Monday to brief members.
