Milburn to Speak at 275th Anniversary Exercises

Major General Bryan L Milburn will be the principal speaker at patriotic exercises for the 275th anniversary celebration. The event, led by Jeremiah W Komang, executive secretary of the celebration committee, occurs at Reynolds School before a parade at 1 00 p m. Milburn, in charge of Army Reserve affairs at the Pentagon, is a Fayeteville Kansas native and a veteran of Coast Artillery and Anti Aircraft Artillery. He held posts including commandant of the Berlin Command and Fort Bliss ties to Bristol. He has served across the United States and overseas and earned the Legion of Merit Bronze Star and the Distinguished Service Medal. He holds an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Louisville.

Bristol Yacht Club Lobster Boil Draws Crowd to Summer Sendoff

The Bristol Yacht Club hosted a lobster boil and dance drawing nearly 100 attendees to close summer activities. Social chairman Russell W Southwick said plans are set for fall and winter events including a club meeting, officer elections, and scheduled S-Boat races on Oct 8 and 9. Frostbite racing may occur in winter as dinghies gain popularity from the Pop Pasquash Neck race 25 years ago. The lobster boil committee included Lester Gurney III and numerous members.

Red Cross Drive Ends Bristol Branch Raises 1216.07

Bristol Branch of the American Red Cross announced over the weekend that the drive has ended with total contributions of 1216.07 toward a goal of 10 million dollars. Individuals listed include Mrs Charles A Zinderstein 1000 Fulton M Farrell and Mr and Mrs Saul Ricklin 500. Other gifts include $200 from Mrs Iola Dunbar and supporters Mr and Mrs Stephen Hopkins and Mr and Mrs John D Moore.

Install New Link At Oliver Street

A 9-foot crack in a main sewer line at Hope and Oliver streets is to be repaired with a new cast iron pipe from Boston. The leak caused raw sewage to spill into the harbor from the Oliver street pumping station, due to years of heavy stone dumped on the line and traffic pressure. Rego and Sons Construction Co. is replacing the pipe for the sewer commission.

OLM Church Plans Purchase of Connors Property

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church plans to buy J E Connors Funeral Home at 117 State Street to convert the house into a convent for the Religious Teachers Filippini nuns. Deed not yet passed. announced at Sunday Mass by Father Sorzana and Father Bernardi. Architect William M O Rourke will supervise the conversion after inspection. Connors originally bought the house from Trinity Episcopal Church in 1949 for use as chapel and rectory.

Town offers land use for dump to renew operator deal

Rego and Sons Construction Co currently runs the town dump on a day to day basis under a contract expiring in June. The town may reuse 20 acres of Rego land at Hopeworth for dumping and consider Minturn Farm as an alternative. Wardwell land near Mt Hope Bay is slated for state condemnation to create a buffer zone for a veterans home amid renewed site reviews.

Teachers Ready for School as 1683 Return to Classes

A total of 1 683 students will return to classes tomorrow including 831 elementary 458 junior high and 394 senior high pupils. Parochial schools reopen Monday with about 1030 students and three local residents begin teaching careers.

Manchester praises operator ambulance for quick aid

Robert T Manchester of 247 Wood Street applauded the town ambulance service the telephone operator and the police department for fast action after his wife suffered a serious hemorrhage at 3 30 am Saturday. The operator tried doctors in town and then arranged Colt Memorial Ambulance through the police. Mrs Manchester was taken to Truesdale Hospital by driver Erasmo Mancini.

Dresses Sent To Naugatuck By The Chamber Of Commerce

The Chamber of Commerce delivered donated dresses to flood affected residents in Naugatuck Connecticut yesterday. Donation came from Priscilla Sportswear Inc with Anthony Ruggiero noted as a chamber member. The same group sponsors a 40 inch banner welcoming visitors to Bristol’s 275th anniversary celebration to be installed on Court street near Town Hall.

Diane Pelland Builds Local Flood Relief Fund

Diane Pelland of 825 Hope street organized a community relief effort for Woonsocket flood victims. She crafted about 50 potholders sold at 15 cents each, raising funds totaling 850 dollars. Assisted by Paula Staples Patricia Rishe and Robert Newman the group seeks guidance to deliver help to public welfare director Mary Perreira.
