Prudence Island's Turn Toward Summer Home Settlement
A late 19th century shift on Prudence Island transformed abandoned farmland into Prudence Park with a steamboat wharf and summer homes. A young man started a tiny summer ferry in 1904 to Bristol, expanding by 1910 to serve a growing seasonal population. By mid century three hundred cottages housed about fifteen hundred people each summer, turning the island into a seaside retreat.
