Memorial Rites for Captain John Nelson West Held at Bristol Cemetery
Yesterday afternoon in North Cemetery Bristol the lifelong Bristol native Captain John Nelson West was laid to rest beside his family. The service led by Rev. A R Parshley followed services at his Summer Street home. He served as second mate on the Dragoon from 1861 to 1864, taking part in battles around Roanoke Island and New Bern. He endured deafness and declining sight in later years but remained a stalwart Bristol figure with a wealth of Civil War reminiscences. He was born December 17, 1838, son of Captain William Hand West and Lydia Salisbury Waldron West, and married Lydia No West in New Bedford in 1854.
