National Banks Prosperous as Gold Reserve Debate Looms

The Bradstreets report, citing Comptroller Dawes in Chicago, says national banks are more prosperous than ever, driven by good crops and farm debt liquidation. He foresees a next session bill to establish a gold reserve fund of 125 to 150 million dollars, arguing it would place currency on a gold basis without contraction. He notes early predictions are uncertain with a presidential year ahead. Elsewhere, railroad and trolley plans in New England and along the Pennsylvania system aim to parallel tracks, improving local transport and freight flow, with trolley integration seen as complementary to railroading.
