1958 tax bills totaling just over 7400 will be mailed after moving the town treasurer and tax collector offices to the first floor. The transfer, by Alfred N. Nunes, aims for completion late this week. Some bills reflect combined auto and real estate taxes, producing a slight decrease from last year.
An addition to the Army Reserve Armory on Asylum Rd is under construction. The 3700 square foot drill shed will house a two bay maintenance shop for vehicles. A north fencing and landscaping plan, overseen by the Army Corps of Engineers with a private contractor, allocates 120 working days.
The Bayside Shores sewer contract was postponed to Friday at 11 o clock to let commissioners consult with the town engineer and town solicitor. Six bids were opened last Friday August 30 with Rego and Sons as apparent low bidder at 38949, but 4725 for 24 manholes raises total to 43673 plus unknown sheathing or ledge. the engineer notes manholes should be included in the base bid.
Edward P Travers reports Bristol County Teachers Credit Union up 20 percent in assets from the prior year as it opens the 1966 70 school year with 142901 41 in assets. Aug 31 figures show 24772 shares totaling 123000 74, serving 327 school personnel and families. Loans total 190962 41 with reserves used to fund lending. The union, chartered in 1941, is supervised by the State Banking Department and operates for members only. Board includes presidents from Primrose Hill Warren and Barrington. 17 area schools served. first time all buildings have reps.
Rhode Island Battery C of the 243rd Anti Aircraft Artillery Battalion will reorganize October 1 as Battery C 243rd Missile BN NIKE RIANG and may occupy Mount Hope Nike site. Major General McGreevy announced the National Guard Bureau plan to convert the unit, with about 35 men to serve full time at the site and others training on weekends. The battalion, based in Providence, Bristol, Newport and Woonsocket, numbers 435 personnel and includes headquarters and four firing batteries. Additional reorganizations affect Newport Battery B and West Warwick Battery A, while training for missile duties begins October 1 coordinated with the 11th Air Defense Group. The unit traces its history to the American Revolution and has served in the Civil War and both World Wars.
