Nunes Wins Contract for Burnside Memorial Vault

Salvador Nunes, local contractor, awarded the bid to build a fireproof vault at Burnside Memorial Building. The project adds rear expansion and space for town officials, includes a second floor toilet, and preserves the building’s appearance. Nine bids were received. Nunes bids 14,300 dollars, just above the lowest bid of 14,145 dollars by A W Merchant Inc. of Providence.

Judge Leahy to Speak at Pastime War Bond Rally

Judge Edward L. Leahy will headline a Pastime Theatre War Savings Bond rally to launch the sale of War Savings Stamps and Bonds. Reginald Dimond announces the Bristol War Savings Committee plans a nine o clock program with lights on, a color guard from Kearney Post No 6, and group singing of God Bless America. Usher slips, pledges, and a salute to the national anthem will close the event, with volunteer women selling bonds in the lobby. Domenic Mascolo leads the color guard with Joseph Edmonds, Fred W Coggeshall, and Samuel J Smith among the members.

Public urged to use V-Mail letters for overseas writing

The Post Office Department announced that the V Mail Service, started June 15 1942, is past the experimental stage with weekly increases in letters mailed to soldiers overseas. V-Mail uses a photo-able letter sheet and micro film to save weight, enabling more military transports. The public is urged to use V-Mail at every opportunity.

Community Sunday on the Common Draws Bristol Crowd

About a thousand residents gathered near Reynolds School for a Bristol Recreation Board event on the High Street side. Louis G Evans operated the sound system, with St Elizabeth's Church providing the platform and Guiteras School piano loan, while Bristol Manufacturing Corp lent a truck for transport. The afternoon featured boxing under Joseph P Quartaro, tap dancing by Kathleen Brito, singing by Irene Gomes Rose Calderiso Virginia Smith and others, and a male quartet with Hill on violin. Next Sunday the Bristol Bugle and Drum Corps will perform in the third installment.
