The Bristol Phoenix reprints a memorial by Rev. Dr. Benjamin Watson praising Bishop Howe, former rector and first bishop of Central Pennsylvania, for his public speaking, administrative skill, and long service on the Episcopal Hospital of Philadelphia board from 1851 to 1871. It notes his death, lists fellow churchmen, and closes with a prayer for departed servants of the church. The piece also includes a local statutory excerpt about railroad bonds and a separate note on the Beach Show at Narragansett Park highlighting the kennel exhibit with substantial premiums and park facilities.
A discolored straw hat from last season can be cleaned with little effort. Mix two cents’ worth of powdered yellow sulphur with lemon juice, rub into the straw with a soft brush, wipe with a damp cloth, and set aside for twenty four hours. Brush again until powder is removed for a creamy color.
A health fad features pillows made from torn paper layered with drilling or ticking to create a cool feel in hot weather. Proponents claim paper pillows surpass feather pillows in comfort. Newspapers are discouraged due to ink odor. brown or white paper and old letters are preferred. The finer the paper is torn, the lighter the pillow becomes.
The town of Little Compton is authorized to purchase Tiverton and Seaconner Point Railroad Company bonds secured by a first mortgage up to twenty five thousand dollars. A town meeting vote approving the purchase is required, with funding from the treasury or by loan. A committee appointed at the town meeting shall carry out the purchase.
The Rhode Island State Fair Association plans a Labor Day opening with amusements, animal exhibits, and farm products at Narragansett Park Providence. Entries must be in by Aug 24, 1896, with mail preferred, and all exhibits ready by Sept 5. The fair will feature vaudeville and novelty shows on a large Midway.
