Doctors and dentists and a bear in a seaside tale
A scattered page from a 19th century paper mixes medical quackery claims about Bright s disease and Sulphur Bitters with humorous vignettes about hyphen lessons and a talking bird. A Georgia man tells a joke about a grizzly bear and a mistaken lover, while moral reflections urge readiness for heaven and daily devotion before ending with a dental joke about a man cheerful despite tooth pain.
Ragged Russians Devour Cheese Then Fight French
The New York Times notes a World War I anecdote about starving Russian soldiers who, at Andermatt, first ate what they thought was a famed cheese, then repulsed the French across the Reuss. Suvorov praised the troops whose valor they credited to the ‘good cheese’ and showed a half-gnawed soap bar as proof.

Extraordinary Skeleton at Burlington House Exhibit
A Sussex County Hospital donation is displayed at Burlington House during the International Medical Congress in London. The skeleton belonged to a man born with both arms broken and a fragile frame, who remained unusually prone to fractures throughout life. He grew to five feet four inches, but by forty his strength waned and after twenty more years his bones had shrunk to about thirty nine and a half inches, with the skeleton now shown about a yard high. His two children reportedly suffered continual bone breaks as well.
