Captain Ashford, Newport Naval War College staff, holds Silver Star Commendation Ribbon Presidential Unit Citation Silver Life Saving Medal Asiatic Pacific Campaign five battle stars. He is Georgia born and a 1927 Naval Academy graduate. He completed Pensacola flight training in 1930 and served in cruisers battleships carriers and patrol squadrons. He was Flag Lieutenant to Admiral Halsey at war start and later air operations officer on the South Pacific commander staff. He commanded a Naval Air Station training fighter pilots and a training carrier for pilot qualification. after the war he led an escort carrier in the Pacific.
