The verse laments Time’s crafty deceit as to day is granted to the wise while fools await a promised morrow. Idle folk rejoice, spend and sleep, believing the to-morrow will be kept. Yet the rogue Time mocks them, letting today decay.
In Monkton a tombstone cutter finishes Hiram Goldby ailing at sea only to learn from a stranger that Pearl the Pearl of Monkton never believed him dead. Years later Hiram returns to Pearl at their cottage, proving faith and longing outlast time and stone.
A newspaper miscellany tale follows an aging financier Mr Merton who delays a mortgage payment for a poor family the Bishops. After a chance encounter with the Bishops the banker experiences a moral transformation and cancels the debt returning a new trust in kindness and shared humanity.
