Lieutenant Governor Harold J. Gross won the Republican state convention on a second secret ballot with 161 votes from 278 delegates to secure the gubernatorial nomination. Ambrose F. Kennedy received 116 votes while Emery J. San Souci had withdrawn from the contest.
The Rhode Island State Convention saw a three way fight for governor after a late clash over renomination of Governor San Souci. Lieut. Gov Gross won the nomination amid heated contest with James E Dooley and William R Fortin for lieutenant governor. Former Gov Beeckman was unanimously named U S Senator. In Bristol, Anderson Allen was killed when struck by Dr John Lake’s car on Main Road near Usher Place, dying en route to Providence.
The Republican Caucus met at Artillery Armory State street and 271 votes were cast for First and Second District candidates for the November 7 election. Walter E Munroe was unanimously nominated for Senator. James F Lavander won the First District Representative nomination with 39 votes, including 15 from women. In the Second District a contest between Albert A Edmonds and William H Thayer produced 232 votes 65 by women. Thayer led with 147 to 85 for Edmonds.
Superintendent William C Hobbs spoke to Italian residents at the Church of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel outlining monthly social events mixing literature and music as part of Americanization efforts. Rev. Joseph Polya introduced him and Italian socities expressed support for the plan.
