USCGC Spar Returns From Arctic Ocean Research Voyage
The Coast Guard Cutter Spar, commanded by LCDR Francis J. Flynn, will dock at 8:30 a.m. after a 17,000 mile Arctic voyage with six oceanographers aboard led by John Wagerman. The three month cruise charted the Jan Mayen fracture zone and collected depth and magnetic readings near Iceland and Spitzbergen. The ship previously circumnavigated North America in 1957 during the Northwest Passage supply run to DEW line stations.

Council Meeting Sparks Sidewalk Fight Over School Access
At last night’s town council meeting a school committee request for sidewalks on Sherry Ave and Naomi St. became a political dispute with Raymond DeLeo accusing officials of a veneer job while opponents cited the cost and narrow road width. Council members debated feasibility, with the highway surveyor noting estimated sums for Chestnut St and the two side streets, and delays possible if funding isn’t available. The discussion also touched on dead animal pickup and a resignation withdrawal by Dog Officer James Flynn.
