The city will enforce crosswalk proximity rules and boulevard stop signals as reflector signs are installed, with court actions for red-tag violations and pedestrians protected.
Commander elect Domenic Mascola of Kearney Post No 6 American Legion announces an intensive campaign to raise membership toward a 110 quota this month All WWI veterans are urged to sign up and send the Bristol Post over the top in 1935 Mascola will be installed as commander at joint ceremonies with the auxiliary unit Friday night at Grand Army Hall Roy L Lawin District Two commander will install Mrs Harry Bullock Auxiliary head and Mrs Bertha Anthonys of Auburn will lead Ladies' Garment installation. invitations go to GAR veterans in Bristol and Babbitt Women's Relief Corps members
The First Bristol Troop, Boy Scouts of America, announced a new era in its program at Scout Hall. Edward Alesandro and John G Anen ante were promoted to junior assistant scoutmasters while Joseph Arouca became senior patrol leader. A New ERA contest will run until December 15 with a winter camping trip to Camp Yawgoog as the prize.
A local appeal describes infantile paralysis as a feared disease that can strike suddenly. It highlights a fourteen year old boy severely affected and future mobility uncertain. Community contributions shown beside names fund an updated wheelchair costing $40.
Funeral services were held at St Marys Church for Mrs Delima Chabot Lemaire who died after a long illness at the home of her daughter in Fall River. She moved from Canada to Bristol area 41 years ago and was an active church and American Legion Auxiliary member. She is survived by ten children and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Burial followed at St Marys Cemetery with relatives serving as bearers.
About twenty five Bristol County representatives met at Hotel Belvedere to form the Callan For Governor Club. They praised Brig Gen Luke H Callan for a Republican candidacy and said he would likely win if nominated at the Rhode Island State Convention on October 10.
Acting Police Chief Anthony J. Ferrara announced the town spent 208.16 to guard workers at the Collins Aikman Mills during the textile strike disorders. The expense covered 400 hours of overtime by regular and reserve officers.
In Arsenal Hall 202 voters backed Thomas H. Byrnes to 68 for Thomas B. Lavey in the First District tally. Lavey plans an independent run, while Pasquale Pagnano and Aaron Fisher secure General Assembly nominations.
The Bristol Colt High Alumni Association announces an annual Harvest Dance on Friday evening Oct 19 at the Colt Memorial High School Auditorium with Edward F E Lewys 28 as arrangements chair. A Massachusetts orchestra is being sought to provide music for dancing and a larger gathering is anticipated. Further committee plans will be discussed at a meeting tomorrow night in the Colt Auditorium.
The Fifth District Court held a notably brief session with Judge Benjamin F Lindemuth taking five seconds to dispose of two disorderly persons cases. Michael Salvaggio and Israel Zimmerman of Boston faced the charges. the court continued them for one week. Attorney Anthony V. Pettine of Providence represented both defendants.
The American Citizens' Club of Barrington met Sunday at their Maple Avenue clubhouse and formally endorsed Brig. Gen. L. H. Calan of Bristol as their gubernatorial candidate.
The Democratic Town Committee filed a new slate to limit allies of Brigadier General Luke H Callan a possible GOP governor nominee. The roster grew from 15 to 23 with notable omissions like Mrs Mary C Leahy and Joseph A Almeida. Endorsement was given to Governor Theodore Francis Green for reelection and the statewide Democratic slate.
Bristol residents will host a lecture series at Warren Baptist Church led by Rev Bernard Iddings Bell of St John's Cathedral Providence. Sponsored by Bristol County School of Religious Education, the talks focus on society and labor amid world unrest. The first lecture is Oct 25 at 7 45, with weekly Thursday sessions to follow.
The Collins & Aikman Girls' Club held its first fall meeting and scheduled a public bingo in their clubrooms on Thames Street for October 19. Frances Marge was named chairwoman with Misses Margaret Proto Catherine St Angelo and Mary Salzano assisting.
