Bristol Phoenix History of M E Sunday School

Continuation of the paper read by Superintendent George H. Peck at the Anniversary Service on Sunday Evening November 15. It recalls Peter Gladding as assistant superintendent in 1829, Eunice Waldron as the oldest living member at 92, and her Oswego Sunday school work. It recounts long time treasurer Francis G. Bowen who died January 20, 1883, Isaac B. Hyde the colored sexton, and his daughter Euniece. Early school methods relied on direct Bible study without notes, with memory work and silver medals for verse recitation in 1822. Susan Wardwell Easterbrooks won the girls’ medal with 1,764 verses. Jonathan D Waldron won the boys’ medal. The article notes later reflection on scripture memorization and concludes with remarks on Mrs Tilley’s scripture collection. (To be continued.)
