Governor vows state guard must stay intact and ready
Governor Beeckman told Rhode Island State Guard officers that there is no thought of disbanding the Guard. He warned that with a skeletonized National Guard and regular army no state can risk disbanding its own guard. He urged keeping ranks filled and training, noting guardsmen are on active duty in several states. Col Bliss announced a new committee on military activities to plan inter company rifle contests and an athletic program to run with drills next month, listing Providence and Cranston members.
