Opening of Tunnel Route Through College Hill Providence
The new tunnel link from Union Station Providence to East Providence and Seekonk River opened Sunday with the first regular passenger train at 7 15 am. The bore, nearly a mile long and eighty feet deep at points, involved 100 tons of dynamite and a two year, 2 million dollar project by McCabe and Hushler. Trains now run on four zones with a 20 cent fare, and Bristol and Providence schedules show heavy initial use as 6,000 Bristol tickets and 15,000 Providence tickets were sold. Continuous work since 1904 transformed the route, eliminating the great curve near Point Street bridges and linking to Worcester, Boston, Warren, Fall River. Continued on fourth page.
