Bristol leaders report a grand total of 329,554.89 in the Bristol Community United War Fund Drive as of Monday. Chairman Elmer S. Mapes says the drive exceeded estimates and urges last reports from workers before the finale tomorrow night. Funds aid USO and War Relief for Allies. payroll deductions from local factories are especially noted.
Kathleen Flynn storekeeper third class of the WAVES visited Saturday morning to brief Dr. Eugene LeClair of Cleveland Ohio about Bristol. Flynn enjoyed the Notre Dame Navy game parade in Cleveland and says naval duties keep her busy though she has some time off. She is staying with her sister at 124 Wood Street and departs Thursday for Cleveland.
YMCA secretary Hubert Hill invites Bristol families to host Navy men stationed at Prudence Island for Thanksgiving. He will collect names and arrange guest invitations with Welfare and Recreation Director Myers, noting the number of guests is still being determined.
The Congregational Club hosts a Nov 20 sale and tea at the Guiteras House. Members and guests will browse holiday items and enjoy refreshments in a social fundraiser setting. Proceeds support club activities.
Joseph R Perroni, father of missing in action Staff Sergeant Anthony Perroni, received a chaplain letter from the 384th Bombardment Group and a commendation from Colonel Julius K Lacey for meritorious actions on a 1943 mission over Germany. The chaplain assures prayers and continued updates and notes possible POW status. The commendation cites WC gunner Perroni’s cool handling under heavy fighter and flak, praising his conduct and signaling hope for his safety and future reunion with his unit.
An exhibit at the Bristol plant of United States Rubber Company showcased war products and cable and wire samples for the Signal Corps Navy and Army. The display included life rafts anti-aircraft gear aviation fuel tanks diving suits and rubber parts for tanks and jeeps among many items. A film illustrated production and uses with plant shots while executives served as guides.
Bristol Post-War Public Projects Planning Committee chair Henry Wood announces the subcommittees and members at the November 9 meeting. Appointments include Finance led by F J Doran with D P Perroni and W H Angeline. Employment Adjustment with W A Armstrong and F S Giglio. Streets and Sidewalks led by P A Herzig. Water Supply Extensions under F J Sylvia. Housing Demolition and Fire Hazards with A Edmonds and Dr Serbst. Private Property Improvements with E Mathewson. Municipal Buildings with W E F Howe. Schools chaired by WM Hamill. Master Map chaired by A A Edmonds. Town Beautiful with R S Bosworth. and legislation chaired by T Capone.
Two local Bristol youths, Joseph C Rezendes Jr and Leo Simmel, reported to the Army Air Forces Pre-Flight School for Pilots at Maxwell Field Alabama to begin pilot training. Rezendes is the son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Rezendes of 104 Bay View Avenue and Simmel is the son of Mr and Mrs William Simmel of 48 Garfield Avenue. Both are graduates of Bristol Senior High School Class of 1943.
The Bristol Community Fund shows a long donor roster including Mr and Mrs R F Haffenreffer 1500 and anonymous 500. Notable names include Robert and Florence Nelson Norman Herreshoff and Bristol teachers association. Officers listed include Charles B Rockwell president and E S Mapes vice president with plan for residential division captains.
The Italian front reports praise for Lieut. Gen. Mark W. Clark from his soldiers and his wife. Clark writes of bravery of Allied troops, including British, and his own sense of duty to return to front lines. A separate odd item notes a South African driver living five years with a knife in his stomach.
