Perilous California Gold Rush Journey and Sufferings

In Sacramento tents and frames dotted the riverbank while fever, dysentery, and scurvy felled a third of the travelers and many locals. The unhealthy river site and seasonal floods bred illness, with washings declining and fortunes variously won or exaggerated. Roads to mines became impassable as rivers swelled, prompting many to abandon mining for Sacramento and Stockton.
