Martin named to school committee and Borges Bridge dedication

Ralph A. Martin, of 8 Church Cove Rd, appointed to succeed Dr Frank B. Correia on the town school committee at a council meeting. The Mill Gut Bridge at Colt State Park will be renamed the Joseph W. Borges Bridge with dedication exercises tomorrow at 10 AM at the State Park, with Major James L. Williams, USMC, as principal speaker. Williams, 31, earned the Silver Star twice and holds other decorations. details of his Vietnam service are noted, with mention of his family in Portsmouth.

Homecoming Marred at Bristol High School Weekend

Bristol High School Homecoming weekend ended in disruption after a ring of juveniles attacked the Saturday dance sponsored by the Portuguese Club. Four musicians were injured and about $500 in damage occurred. The incident led to suspensions, including Richard Riley, named ring-leader, and a temporary halt to several youths.

Smoke Problems Plague Council

The council heard a withdrawn junk license application filed by Sabato Stanzione of Broad Common after a neighbor complaint from Manuel and Maria Amaral. Attorney Anthony Berretto cited town rules on salvage yard legality and Stanzione said he would reapply for a junk and second hand dealer license. Residents filed a petition over a smoke nuisance tied to burning waste metals. state air officials called the smoke mist, while the town engineer called it smoke. A letter will invite Dr Joseph Cannon to Bristol to discuss the issue. The council also reviewed riot control equipment needs after officers attended state and FBI trainings, with plans to discuss further at the Dec 10 meeting. Resignation of Helene Tessler as community center chair was not accepted.

Bristol Senators Push for Rail Terminus in Bristol

Bristol lawmakers Sen Joseph Bruno and Rep Henry Pacheco praised a proposed Rhode Island metropolitan commuter rail as bold and imaginative. They urged that the east shore line terminate in Bristol rather than Warren, noting cost minimality and benefits to commuters. They pledged support for governor recommendations while seeking Bristol service.
