A public concert Friday evening at Memorial Hall marks the 1935 season. The program includes violin duets by Angelo Russo, piano solos by Miss Priddy Teal, alto solos by Je Turbin, soprano Marjorie Burgess, and other instrumental performances. Young Faust Fuoti, aged 13, is noted as a notable new musician.
The First Bristol Troop, Boy Scouts of America, met at Scout hall for First Class Night with tests and instruction led by A S M Joseph Arouca Jr and others. Patrols Beta Pi and Ever Ready tied for honor. plans for Armistice Day parade and a special troop meeting were made.
The Hope Circle No. 70 Daughters of Isabella hosted an annual installation in the Knights of Columbus rooms on State Street. Miss Nora E. Dwyer, Regent, led the new officers, including Past Regent Margaret Con Callan and Vice Regent Margaret Connery, as guests from multiple Rhode Island units attended. A chicken patty supper followed, organized by a hostess committee led by Mrs. De Breen.
Mount Hope Chapter of the Eastern Star and the Doric Club plan a revival of popular tunes from fifty years ago. The event will be led by Mrs Gladys B Brightman at the Guiteras Memorial Junior High School auditorium on December 1 and 13. Frank L Doran writes the dialogue. A committee including George W Boutilier Albert Johnson and many others organizes the program.
Kearney Post No. 6 American Legion will sponsor a Christmas Basket Fund to aid Bristol’s needy. Commander Hall directs the drive for funds and distribution of food baskets. Skipper Reid Clair oversees baskets. Delegates Hall Edmonds Enos Cuomo Bruno Smith attend district meeting in Portsmouth. Auxiliary plans to send flowers on Armistice Day. A whist series begins November 6 at Mrs. Walter Carr’s home.
Most Rev. Francis P. Keough will administer the sacrament of confirmation at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. The bishop of the Rhode Island diocese will make his first parish visit and more than 209 candidates are expected to receive the rites at 3 p.m. parish societies will form a guard of honor.
Impetus in membership drive for the Bristol Portuguese-American Athletic Association adds 17 new members at a Sunday meeting in club rooms on Franklin Street. Mathew G. Maetoza, president, presided and welcomed them. Plans for fall and winter activities were discussed. Refreshments were served by Frank Vera Louis Reposa Louis Almeida Daniel Vargas and Joseph Dias.
The New England Council invites former North Carolina Governor O Max Gardner and Waymack associate editor of the Register-Tribune Des Moines to speak at the Tenth Anniversary New England Conference in Boston November 21 22. It marks the first time Southern and Western representatives interpret their regions economic objectives to the New England business community.
A two mile Bristol Common handicap race will headline Armistice Day sports. Only Bristol residents may enter, with trophies donated by Council President Prescott B Paull and Brig Gen L H Callan. The day also features a parade with local and visiting groups and a memorial program at Colt Memorial High School.
The Bristol branch of the American Red Cross opened its annual drive with both the Daughters of Isabella No. 70 and the Bristol Lions Club donating $5 each. The contributions were made at their respective meetings last night, ahead of the Armistice Day kickoff.
Retail storekeepers from across the state plan a protest meeting against a retail sales tax to be held Tuesday November 12 at 7 30 p m in the Narragansett Electric Co auditorium. Channing Sweitzer of the National Retail Dry Goods Association will speak on Sales Taxes and state retailers will discuss forming a statewide organization.
The social committee conducted a successful whist party Friday evening at Burnside Lodge. First prize winners were Mrs Helen Martelly Arthur Brelsford, second prize winners were Mrs Metta Nelle Milton Paine, and third prize winners were Mrs Louise Morine Jack Monahan. The committee in charge included Martin Nelle as chairman with Charles Bickford and George Luther planning another event soon.
A town committee with the American Legion seeks public contributions to fund Armistice Day observances. Donations may be left at the Phoenix Office or James F. Duffy's Store. The record shows a 1934 balance of 14.49, with prior receipts totaling 114.49 and multiple individual and group gifts bringing the current total to 147.99.
West G. Brown factory manager of United States Rubber Products in town was named chair of the ways and means committee for St. Michael's Church annual financial drive. Other members include William H. Angevine J. Winthrop DeWolf Wallis E. Howe and many local leaders.
Workers moved from ERA to WPA yesterday bringing total on WPA to 266. Among them 35 women work in the Reynolds school sewing room project, 82 men develop DeCristofaro Avenue, and the rest are in two other projects including a new athletic field behind Guterras Memorial Junior High and a retaining wall along that property.
Two veterans at the Soldiers Home endured a scare as a gunshot shattered a porch post and a bullet whistled over another worker near the horse shoe court. Commandant Aime Forand blames careless trespassing hunters and says federal and state officials are now on guard.
Henry DeWolf aged 67 of 54 Taft Avenue West Newton Massachusetts was struck by an automobile driven by Anthony Cocco of 39 Bournatret in this town. He suffered contusions to his left knee and ankle and a possible knee cap injury. He was treated by Dr. D'Ange.
Residents of Helena initially treated the earthquakes as a joke but as shocks persisted they grew terrified. They now hurry to open spaces for protection whenever tremors are felt, amid loss of life and extensive property damage.
