Women on Harvard staff and a proposed Atlantic cable
Five women work in Harvard College Observatory computing staff. Observers note European observatories show women excel in normal data reductions. New York 1882 Excursion on Steamships as Assassination Hunt
In a vivid 1882 New York scene a junketing party of marshals and detectives chased rumors of Lord Cavendish and Mr. Burke’s assassination aboard incoming ships. A Scythia boarding yielded three examinations, while a passenger from Wisconsin vanished ashore. The piece riffs on rapid transit, electric power, and looming naval advances, then pivots to lawyers and doctors, noting an oversupply and then detailing the eccentric Miss Sarah Burr estate dispute with kinship squabbles and charitable bequests.
