Ride to Work Together Effort Gathers Steam in Bristol

Stephen W. Hopkins reports the Council of Defense push for carpooling to save gasoline and tires. A Reynolds School survey gathered input from about 250 Bristol residents who work in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, with many drivers willing to share rides or double up. Hopkins offers to connect workers who commute to Providence Pawtucket Quonset Newport or Fall River and notes some registrations may have been missed with serious tire concerns.

Three Day Service This Week At Synagogue

Members of the Chevra Agudas Achim Synagogue will hold Shovous or Festival of Weeks Services in the synagogue on High street beginning Wednesday evening, Thursday morning and evening. Yiskor memorial services for departed family members will be held Friday morning. Shovous marks the sixth and seventh days of Sivan and celebrates the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai and the bringing of the first fruit to the temple.

Ration Board Grants Tires Tubes in Quiet Session

The Rationing Board approved permits for Irene G Botelho and William L Coggeshall for tires and tubes. A State office telegram asked no publicity for gasoline ration X cards though some cards have been surrendered by residents who found they could manage with less gasoline.

Garden Club Members Win At Providence Show

Bristol Garden Club members topped awards at the Providence Flower Show sponsored by the Federated Garden Clubs of Rhode Island. Mrs Sebastian Bernard Jr won first in Hogarth line of beauty and second in foliage with fruit or vegetable. Mrs Fred N Palmer took two firsts in symmetrical dinner and miniature arrangements and earned honorable mention in foliage with fruit or vegetable. Mrs Haffenreffer received the Tri color award for best individual entry.

Householders To Be Checked On Plans For Air Raid Protection

Last evening Air Raid Wardens met at Legion Hall to receive Household Registration cards for a nationwide survey. The cards ask for refuge room location and approval, counts of adults and children, and available home defense measures such as hose sand shovels buckets and gas masks. Wardens aim to complete the survey quickly to support air raid preparedness.

Air Raid Wardens Take Their Final Exams

Bristol hosts the final ARP wardens exam with 212 volunteers aged 21 to 65 from diverse professions. Lt Col George T Thompson supervised a 40 question test on raid conduct, incendiaries, and gas handling. graduation is Sunday June 7 at Reynolds School with tickets.

Red Cross Motor Corps reports on its activities

Bristol Red Cross Motor Corps on call 24 hours for state emergencies. Capt Herreshoff and Lt Flint outline duties training and achievements. Since July 31 1941 the corps has driven 747 12 hours delivering patients to seven hospitals.

Evacuation Attendants Urged To Attend Interviews

Supt. E S Mapes urges signed up evacuation attendants to attend interviews for instruction. A previous session at Colt Hill School drew fewer than half of 141 attendees. Another interview series will be held at Reynolds School Thursday from 10 30 to 11 30 am and 1 30 to 3 30 pm with distribution of instruction sheets and ID cards.

Re-elected Officers Lead Bristol Children's Home

Mrs Wallis E Howe was re-elected presiding officer of the Bristol Children's Home at the annual meeting held Tuesday at 221 Hope Street. She serves in that role for the 27th year. Other officers retained include Mrs C B Rockwell as assistant presiding officer and Mrs Sarah C Munro as secretary. The Board of Managers and Advisory Board were named with Rev Arthur W Burdon, pastor of First Baptist Church, conducting the meeting.
