Brown Freshman Banquet at Hotel Belvedere Provokes Pranks
Brown University class of 1912 marked its freshman banquet with a raid by sophomores who hijacked cars, freed captives, and tied some to poles. Victims were stripped, shuttled around Bristol Neck, and some escaped from a second story window. Richard Jay Adams, slated to be toastmaster, was captured. Festivities included a large crowd, Manager Hathaway’s dinner, songs, and speeches by William Earl Strackling and others. The night ended with cheers for Brown and a lively march through Providence, regarded as a grand success.
