John Howland Pitman dies at his home on Franklin street after a winter illness. He would have turned 90 on April 30 but the celebration was canceled. A devout Christian, he was beloved in Masonic circles and in his church where he showed kindness, honesty, and a genial disposition that endears him to many.
Arbor Day events held today in public schools feature the planting of a seven foot purple beech in the common near the courthouse and Byfield school. A sealed bottle with this year’s school report and the class of 704 program is buried at the tree’s foot beside a granite block inscribed Class of 704, B. H. S. The program includes songs, recitations, bee lore, and an address by M. A. Cheesman in a community Arbor Day observance.
John Howland Pitman born April 30 1814 in Bristol son of Samuel and Sarah Pitman. A sailor’s son, he learned rope making, later worked as a gardener, and served in St Albans Lodge as treasurer for 46 years. Funeral from St Michael's church with Masonic rites, interment in North Cemetery. Catherine Galvin dies aged 62 after pneumonia at 356 High Street. Funeral from her home to St Mary’s Church and burial in St Mary’s Cemetery.
A local farmer, bent with rheumatism, was given Chamberlain's Pain Balm by a farmhand. After a few days he returned to pay for another bottle, claiming it kept him straight and ready to work. Sold by W. HB Buffington.
The Young People's Society accepted an invitation and will travel to Warren this evening for the annual Social. They met for rehearsal of the Anniversary programme yesterday, with details noted elsewhere in this issue. A reception invitation from Trinity Union church Providence was also accepted. Pawtucket youths plan an outing for the Union gathering, expected June 11 with about fifteen hundred aboard a special boat. Sunday morning will feature the Report of World-wide Methodism to the Council in Session at Los Angeles Cai.
