Drive-to-work clubs urged to ease wartime transport strain

The Defense Council Control Center calls for more volunteers to cover day shifts from 8 am to 11 pm in five 3 hour blocks. The roster lists assigned volunteers by day for next week including Mrs J H Toplin and many others across all seven days.

Sugar Applicants Exceed Bristol Census Figures

Total registration for sugar ration books in Bristol reached 11 334, 175 more than the 1940 census. With over 400 men away on armed service, this suggests a rising local population. Superintendent of Schools V Mapes also reports registrations at Reynolds Guiteras and Colt schools as follows.

Feast of Ecco Homo Observed at St Elizabeth’s Church

The Feast of Ecco Homo will be observed at St Elizabeth's Church on Sunday with an 11 o'clock high mass by Rev. Henrique R Rocha followed by a 3 o'clock service and a 4 o'clock procession. The procession features the first public display of the new anchor platform for the statue of Christ, crafted by Manuel Machado de Silvia, with donations from parishioners. The procession route runs from the church along Wood to Franklin, then Bay View and back to St Elizabeth's for benediction. Committee members include Manuel Teixeira, Manuel Sousa, and John Almeida.

Volunteer Canteen Helpers Sought by Bristol Red Cross

Mrs Clara Diman executive secretary of the Bristol Branch of the American Red Cross calls for more volunteer canteen workers. The current class has three of seven lessons focused on nutrition with four lessons on mass feeding to follow. There are thirteen women in training and more are urged to respond. Volunteers should report to Mrs McFawn at 11 am Wednesday at St Michael's Parish House where classes are in session.

Historian William G Roelker Addresses Bristol Meeting

William G Roelker director of the Rhode Island Historical Society spoke on The Bombardment of Bristol 1776 at the Bristol Historical Society meeting. He was named an honorary member and seven new members joined. The board agreed to buy a $100 War Bond and affiliate with the Southern New England Historical Conference. Miss Alice B Almy announced a project to record headstones at North Cemetery.
