Admiral Hoover to Convene Civil Defense Meeting May 10

The first post appointment Civil Defense meeting led by Admiral Gilbert C. Hoover USN ret., set for Thursday at 7:30 p m at the YMCA. Local CD volunteers observed statewide drills including a simulated enemy air attack and rescue drill with signals indicating attack and clearance. Hoover urges civilians to seek shelter quickly and to stay calm during atomic events.

Three Local 4-H Clubs Exhibit Handicrafts at School

The three 4-H clubs of the town displayed handicrafts and other projects Saturday at Guiteras Junior High in a county contest. Walter D Waterman and Miss Muriel Dame supervised cooking dressmaking bee projects model aircraft and activities. Bristol Neck Club led by John Leahy showcased a fine bee hive and Sowams and Young Junipers clubs had dresses and demonstrations. Awards went to Paul Carreiro William Pike Jonathan Sanford Leonard Sanford Sandy Alessandro Anthony Aciello John Burke Frederic Cornell Donnie Mc Ginn Bill DuPont Robert Leahy John Leahy and David Usher.

Chest X-Ray Clinic Dates Set May 14 26

The X-Ray chest clinic will run May 14 through May 26 with hours 1 PM to 7 PM. Oscar A. Rishe announced the drive funded by the state health department. The first four days focus on plant workers with Donald Berger leading industrial plant exams.

Contractors To Give Dirt For Memorial Park

Contractors Loranger and Sons and A Piatelli Co will supply dirt from ditches to level Wood Street Memorial Park as part of Washington street relief sewer work. Admiral Gilbert C Hoover USN ret and John Carmone oversee the plan to fill low spots. A town vote redirected $20 000 for a memorial. $18 000 remains to fund a veterans memorial in the park.

Twilight League to Play Twice a Week Through Aug 16

The Twilight League baseball season opens May 7 at 6 pm in Bristol with Ascoli's facing Collins & Aikman. St. Elizabeth meets Riccio's Engineers May 10, and the league closes August 16 after two games weekly. Leaders expect strong talent and good baseball.

Two Big Affairs At Rhode Island Veterans Home

Two events will draw visitors at the Rhode Island Veterans Home on May 6 and May 7. The Women’s Relief Corps will rededicate 30 catalpa trees named for veterans with a quartet and Boy Scout drum corps performing. On May 7 Governor Dennis J. Roberts and VFW Commander-in-Chief Charles C. Ralls will inspect the Home followed by a noon luncheon and a VFW party of officials from nearby posts.
