Bristol Rhode Island nears full Red Cross drive success with 97 percent of a 5500 quota raised and cash on hand plus new commitments totaling 5382. If another 118 comes in before next week’s close Bristol may surpass rivals as the only Rhode Island community over the top.
Chief Peter C. Altieri a Bristol based Coast Guard cutter Spar crewman was honored at a farewell dinner with three Bristol friends and shipmates. Palm Sunday services open Holy Week with palms distributed in Protestant churches and Catholic rites including Holy Eucharist on Holy Thursday. Catholics plan seven church visits, altar stripping, and a Good Friday vigil. Easter Sunday will feature the Easter Blessing and water ceremonies. The First Congregational and First Baptist Churches announce Holy Thursday Communion services with new members welcomed.
Nelson G. Beals, previously co-director of Bristol Civil Defense under Wil fred F. Tetreault, was appointed director by the town council after Tetreault agreed to resign following pressure from CD administration officials. Police Chief Anthony J. Earrara disclosed the weekend talks leading to Tetreault stepping down, replacing him with Beals amid council plans for a new leadership path.
