In an active session the Sena Finance Committee studies a bill to require night guards at demolition sites following a Providence firefighter’s death. Rhode Island Senate considers bill to expand court size

A Senate bill by Democrat Gilbert T Rocha of East Providence would raise civil case jurisdiction from $1,000 to $4,000 and cut judicial districts from 12 to eight. It proposes full time judges for four year terms, salary increases, and clerks gaining powers of justices of the peace, with Rhode Island Supreme Court expanding to seven justices including a Chief Justice. The measure, not yet enacted, is under Judiciary Committee review.
