St Marys Church women finalize a monster card party for April 22 to fund the main event. A series of preludes began with a committee meeting at the Nerone home and feature chairs for tickets refreshments tables and prizes with many volunteers listed.
Clergymen from local Protestant churches and town officials will attend the reception for Rev Arthur W. Burdon new pastor of the First Baptist Church. The 8 pm event in the church auditorium features greetings from leaders including Herbert D. Graetz Anthony Parshley and Rev Marvin W Topping. Town President Prescott Paul and speakers Rev Raymond L. Spoerri and I Louis Aber will join the program. A committee including Fred Hodgson and Mrs Pauline Bullock organized the event.
Mid week events feature Rev Leonard B Rasmusson preaching at Evensong 8 PM at St Marks Warren and St Michaels Holy Communion 9 30 AM with a children service 3 45 PM. Rev Fr George F Gorman guest preacher at 7 30 PM benediction at St Martins Asserman and Denecate at 7 30 PM. Rev Henrique Rocha to lead Our Lady of Mt Carmel benediction 7 30 PM assisted by Rev Anthony Bainotts.
In a Providence radio address Superintendent E S Mapes argues high schools must shift from purely academic programs to broad vocational and life skills. He cites Dr Butterfield on five work rooms including social studies physical sciences arts reading and industrial arts plus domestic home making and guidance to prepare all pupils for working life. The Connecticut Commissioner of Education is cited.
Prescott B Paull was elected to the Bristol Country Water Company Board of Directors at a Friday meeting on March 18.
At a postponed annual meeting in the Holmes House of St Michael's Church the Trinity parish authorized the vestry to hire a rector as plans for a new church proceed. More than 50 members attended and a spokesman said sentiment favored a new edifice though no final decision was reached. Parishioners have been attending services in St Michael's since the last summer demolition for Andrews Memorial School. Funds from the De Wolf estate must be used for rebuilding or go to the Diocese for education if Trinity ceases. A finance committee was named to draft a budget.
A Rhode Island State Police representative will speak at the Bristol County Safety Council program on highway safety. The talk, secured through Stanley E. Friswell, will be held Saturday evening in Bristol Division quarters on Wood Street with committee members listed.
The Town Council will consider a permanent police officer for the town's outlying areas following a $13 000 taxpayer appropriation. Nine candidates are in the field led by Special Officer John L Cardoza who previously sought a berth. Other contestants include Stanley J Tupaj Lawrence Ascoli Erasmo Mancini Anthony Volpe Anthony Marshall John L Flynn and Arthur Tattie.
The Countryside Garden Club met at Miss Nora E. Dwyer’s home to finalize plans for a Spring Flower Show exhibit. The show, sponsored by the Federation of Garden Clubs, will be in R 1 Auditorium in April with a committee led by Mrs Sebastian Bernard Jr and including Mrs Laws Beauregard Mrs William L. Serbst and Mrs C M Connery. The next meeting is set for April 8 at Mrs Catherine Bertrand’s home.
Two members of the Bristol County True Sportsmen's Association released 33 pheasants yesterday across more than 700 acres under club access in Bristol Warren and Barrington. Louis V Santo and Salvatore Rand di led the release task for hunters in the Bristol County area.
Hope Circle members of D I met last night to form a study club under Rev Michael L Ryan pastor of St Marys Church. Over eight meetings members will devote three quarters of an hour to study with Mass as the opening topic on April 4. They also arranged a food sale for Easter Saturday and a chowder and clam cake sale at the K of C home on April 1.
The Oliver school area teachers met yesterday in the Reynolds school auditorium for a Bristol Teachers' Association routine business session. Hostesses Mrs Madeline Southwick and others welcomed members while Vincent Leahy served as president during the meeting.
School nurse Mary L. Sanford told the committee that skin conditions and colds led to exclusions from the Taft School public school. She noted the chicken pox outbreak among pupils is nearly over. In February 268 children visited clinics, 84 needed medical dressing, 18 were sent home.
Attendance Officer James F Meiggs reported February figures show 9 investigated cases with 5 truants and 4 resolved. Of the others 13 were kept out by parents, 10 lacked proper clothing, 5 due to family illness, 43 due to personal illness, 8 sent to school, 3 to obtain papers to leave, and 3 moved from town. Parents of 26 students were admonished to improve attendance.
A Boston Post Office Department representative auctions magazines tied in bundles of six in the main lobby of the Federal Building. Large crowds gather around noon on the first or second Wednesday each month to watch the event.
The Department bundles hundreds of torn magazines and auctions them to the public. An auctioneer reads titles such as Vogue Harper’s Bazaar Time and Esquire while bidders push prices from 20 to 50 cents. The event showcases how discarded issues are liquidated.
An auctioneer and helpers hand out bundles of magazines described as current and valuable. Buyers can snag half a dozen magazines for about fifty cents, with typical prices averaging 45 to 50 cents and some reaching 70 to 75 cents.

Some wait for the bundle that fits them best and leave satisfied, while others linger the full half hour and buy several bundles. It’s a gold mine of inexpensive current reading matter with Uncle Sam taking a small cut and the intended readers the only losers.
