Swedish sailor becomes purser on Kungsholm

Evert Eriksson, 48, once sailed as foremast hand on the four-masted Pedersen, now serves as purser aboard the Kungsholm. He trained for duties, handled food and paperwork, and acts as social secretary for passengers. His career included a 150 day voyage from Sydney to Cork and three Cape Horn rounds.

Town council splits on Wood street lighting addition

Fourth Committee Named 48 Members Listed

Town council appoints 48 members to the Fourth of July celebration panel after a six week delay. The lineup includes 41 from the 1953 committee and 7 added by the council, with resignations from Anthony A. Balzano and Boswell S. Bosworth Jr. Also named are prominent local figures such as Joseph F. Bruno and Oscar A. Rishe, among others.

Gate Dedication at St Marys Honors Connery Family

Mary and Robert J Connery and relatives attended a Sunday service at St Marys Church for the dedication of bronze altar gates from Toscani Italy. The Alpha Omega and Holy Trinity designs honor their parents siblings and a nun in various memorials. Two Persian rugs from Mrs Elizabeth M O'Donnell's estate were blessed and placed on the altar steps.

Senior Class Presents Brother Goose at Bristol High

The Bristol Senior High School Class of 1954 staged a comedy Brother Goose by William Davidson in Guiteras Auditorium on Thursday and Friday. The production drew large crowds and earned hearty applause for a cast led by Paul Price as Jeff and Hortense D Alessi o as Carol with stage craft by James Meiggs and Margaret Nerone.

The twelve page brochure on Bristol's industrial features is ready for distribution this week. Civic Industries Committee members will staff envelopes before the meeting for a Wednesday mailing. Fern Associates did the layout, Narragansett Lithograph Co. printed it, and Advertisers Engraving Co. donated engravings.

Jaycees Aid Red Cross Fund Drive Effort In Bristol

The Bristol Junior Chamber of Commerce volunteers to trouble shoot the Red Cross fund drive. Michael A. Rucci announced the Jaycees will fill last minute canvasser vacancies and cover unassigned areas. A one day drive is set for Sunday March 21 with organizations already contributing.

Three Bristol High Students Join Model Legislature

Bristol Senior High School will send three students to the 7th Annual B I Model Legislature on March 20. Senate member John Matheson of the National minority party serves on the Finance Committee and helps study veteran bonus bills. House members Paul Price and Paul D Amico, representing the Union and National parties respectively, work on the Corporations and Labor committees for sponsoring state property and unemployment measures. Parties Work As Unit On Charter Move

Council President Joseph F Bruno announced that sufficient signatures for a special election on Home Rule will likely be gathered within 30 days. He said bipartisan committees are being formed with the Democratic committee naming Janet Clark Henry Pacheco Frank Miserandino Edward Pontes Anibal Estrella, while the Republican town meeting acts as a single committee of 42 members pursuing signatures.

Chief outlines rules for outdoor burning and rubbish burners

Fire Chief Oscar Rishe issued a stand against improper burns after seven Fire Department calls. The department bans lighting fires on streets or vacant lots without permission and prohibits unprotected piles. Only enclosed burners are approved, and unattended wire or slatted burners near combustibles are forbidden. Rhode Island law adds prohibitions and permit requirements.
