Taxpayers face a preliminary civilian defense budget of $50,000 or more as Col Paul T. Martin, retired U S Army, directs plans. Engineering and rescue work are led by Capt Luke H. White who oversees life and property protection against atomic and other air hazards.
Col. Martin announced a notable speaker will address a large audience at the American Legion Post home Friday night March 9 at 8 o clock. The town is urged to turn out in strong numbers for the event.
Col Martin outlined a civilian defense package costing about 21 000 dollars with a 3 000 dollar siren, radioactivity detectors, two way radios, and emergency lighting for HQ hospitals and key sites. Loyalty oath blanks will be provided for all assigned workers and the plan requires taxpay- er approval. Early action is urged to save lives in an atomic attack.
Rotary Club members saw an official Army picture showing the first 40 days of American fighting in Korea. The image was obtained through arrangements made by Ray Makowsky.
Mt Carmel Church hosts a Lenten film and Passion play tonight at 8 pm in the parish house with a Sunday 7 30 pm showing and a Sunday 2 pm matinee for children The public is welcome to attend Arc tic Missions of the MacKenzie is the featured film title and a Passion play will also be shown.
The Sunshine Society schedules its annual bridge gathering at the Midway Steak and Lobster House on Tuesday March 6 at 8 p m with Mrs John McIntosh serving as general chairman and leading the ticket committee. Numerous members assist across refreshments prizes publicity and table prizes as listed in society notices.
The Rev Dr Clarence H Horner rector of Grace Church Providence will speak at the fifth Wednesday night union Lenten service hosted by four Protestant churches. The service is at St Michael's Episcopal church on March 7. Earlier, Canon Daniel K Davis rector of St Michael's will address "Prudence and Fortitude" at the Baptist church on March 6 with tea served by women of the host church.
Police officers McCallum Baker and Serbst recovered a stolen car within eight minutes from the theft and arrested two sailors from a Newport ship. The car was moving toward Mt Hope bridge when spotted near Winston Fetherston’s home. Officers notified bridge attendants and the Fetherston family before pursuing and intercepting the suspects as they tried to drive into the Columban Fathers Seminary grounds. The sailors remained in custody overnight.
Maurice C. Smith Jr. and Bristol Manufacturing honor 40 years in rubber goods with a surprise office gathering. A fireplace bellows and taper gift were presented by his son Maurice Smith III. Smith began as a stenographer for U S Rubber Co. on February 27, 1911 and is noted as a national authority on waterproof and sports footwear.
Mrs Emmie E Herlein a nearly 30 year Prudence Island resident was honored at a Tuesday night party hosted by her daughter and son in law Sol M Kaiman. Thirty one islanders attended with gifts flowers music by the Islanders band and refreshments.
Seven organized property owners groups in town were sent letters by Highway Surveyor Joseph F. Pannone asking them to submit road improvement needs for consideration before the April town meeting. The associations include Bristol Park Shores Bristol Bay Shores Highlands Beach Terrace Cedar Crest Narrows and Butterworth Improvement Association.
Knights of Columbus Council 379 exemplified the First Degree to a large class of candidates on Wednesday night in K of C hall. Grand Knight Joseph Cavallaro appointed a committee to plan Third Degree exemplification. The council voted $5 to the Red Cross and announced Holy Hour at St Marys church March 22 from 7:30 to 8:30 PM. Members will meet at 7:45 AM to march to St Marys for Communion and return to the hall for breakfast.
Miss Edna Phillips coloratura soprano will perform on April 15 in Bristol under the Bristol Community Concert association replacing Dorothy Sarnoff mezzo-soprano. Phillips has signed for a Broadway production and cancelled other engagements. The Colt Memorial High School auditorium hosts the final concert of the season.
Local Democrats split create a three way contest for first councilman in Bristol. E Hugh Holmes filed with 73 signers, 56 eligible, Clark endorses the Holmes bid while withdrawals closed. The 1939 three corner race ended with a Republican sweep and a decade of control.
Collins & Aikman properties on Burnside Street were sold yesterday to Jesse P. Sousa of 11 Pleasant Street. The six wooden frame buildings total 40 000 square feet of floor space on about 33 600 square feet of land with parking and loading facilities. Sousa intends to market the buildings for industrial use and may sell them separately or as a unit.
An unusual number of adults in the town suffer a mild virus illness that appears nationwide. School officials report average attendance at both high school and elementary grades while physicians note many people are ill.
Frank L. Hinckley attorney for Alfred L. Steel and Alfred Ogden informs Roger Pigeon planning board chair that a plat on the north side of Low Lane in assessor’s plat 166 was subdivided without board approval. Engineer Riccio noted the omission and Hinckley claims trustees were unaware of a platting regulation and will act as required. He said inquiry about regulations occurred two years ago and there were none.
Bristol Zoning Board plans to ask the budget committee and town council for a 5000 appropriation to revise the town zoning laws. The move follows a petition by Ralph M. DeLeo Construction Co for a six family ranch on Homestead avenue near the Midway, which sparked debate over whether a zoning change is needed.
A CHS Monitor feature by John F. Hayes describes a county fair balloon ascent seen through the eyes of local boys who helped inflate the craft. The owner, a soot-streaked man in a derby, urged extra pumps as the black balloon rose, while his wife dangled below in a dramatic moment the boys recall with intense excitement.
A traveling circus scene in 1909 Livingston County ends with a woman performer in tights and spangles on a trapeze. The balloon rises, she drops with a parachute, and the balloon collapses, leaving farmers chasing a five dollar reward while she returns in a straggly dress.
