An Army major aboard a TP boat insists on reaching Outer Brewster Island to inspect lighters despite rough outer seas. The skipper warns of danger as waves batter the vessel and the major turns green and demands return, the dock proving unreachable in heavy surf.
Bonfire preparations continue as 40 tons of wood are gathered for a midnight burn at the Castle waters edge. The Tilley house remains a major stack, aided by donations from U S Rubber Co and others. Ambassador John J Muccio, famed diplomat in U S service, will speak at Bristol Fourth of July exercises.
Eighteen to twenty midshipman style soapbox cars will race down Bay View Avenue Friday night with no professionals. The winner receives a bicycle and runners up prizes, while all entrants earn a prize. Judges are J Nunes Roger W Pigeon and Paul C Millemaggi. Miserandino chairs the subcommittee and announces prizes on display at Evans store. The first heat starts at 8 p m near Buttonwood and Bay View.
The Navy band comprising destroyer fleet and Navy Station unit will perform at the Common bandstand at 2 p.m. on July 4 with Frank Banyas, MAC USN, conducting. The program includes national anthem, marches, and selections from Verdi and Romberg among others.
Bristol residents received letters from the New England Telephone and Telegraph Co seeking views on expanding service to Providence. The plan would end tolls on Providence calls and raise monthly rates by 1.25 dollars for 1 and 2 party lines and one dollar for 4 party lines. Submissions were requested before engineering and construction, with effect anticipated in 1955.
Fourteen Bristol Girl Scouts join Mrs. G. Sturdevant for the July 4th celebration tag day. They meet at Ferris Dry Goods Store at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to gather supplies for the fundraiser. Funeral arrangements for Neil Anthony Asciolla five son of Mr and Mrs Anthony Asciolla Connery Funeral Home report his death from polio at age five The service will be held at Holy Angels and a Mass at St Marys Church will follow with burial in St Marys Cemetery
Town workers honor Amos S. Gorham upon his 35 years as tax collector with a party in the Assessors office. The event, organized by Chief Ferrara and others, includes a gift and flowers for his wife. Gorham, a descendant of Bristol founder John Gorham, will see his roles of tax collector and town treasurer consolidated the next day under Alfred N. Nunes.
A Bristol boy born April 8, 1948 died last night at Charles V. Chapin Hospital from bul bar polio. He was admitted Saturday prior to his death. Survived by a cane and grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Malafronte and great grandmother Mrs. Edward Goulet.
Ralph F. Kinder marshal of the antique car division reports about two dozen old timers will gather here for the Fourth spectacle. Entries come from Narragansett Pier and Bristol County, with cars from Warren Attleboro and Newport and other Rhode Island towns. Notable entries include a 1906 Stevens-Duryea, 1907 Buick, 1914 Stafford, 1916 Pierce-Arrow, and a 1914 Webb Knight special among others.
A completed radar systems course at Keesler Field leads to a 15 day July furlough for the airman. He will return to Keesler to become an instructor after the break, following studies on radar types, repair, and jamming techniques.

It takes 66 to 80 minutes to get the boiler pumping properly.
