Ambergris finder Capt Mandly recalls 1920 whale voyage
In New Bedford Captain Henry Mandly recalls leading the Valkyrie to a Haiti whaling trip in 1920 that yielded an 85 pound ambergris cache sold for 16000 dollars. He recalls his long whaling apprenticeship starting in 1898 aboard the Mary E. Simmons and details food on early voyages, odd dishes, and life at sea.
