Old Ironsides Undergoing Face Lift at Charlestown Navy Yard
The Constitution nicknamed Old Ironsides has spent little time in dry dock since 1797 and is now at Charlestown Navy Yard for repairs. Its ancient timbers, some aimed for War of 1812, are being replaced with old planks saved from earlier shipbuilding while reflecting a long naval history. Lt. John A. Lord of Bath Maine supervised the 1927 28 rebuild and learned of buried wood used in repairs.
