Resolution Passed After Deleting Controversial Clauses

Resolution Fails to Shift Work to Needy Taxpayers

The discussion notes that the current resolution returns work to needy taxpayers only after investigation. It states relief already exists for taxpayers in need, and the status of needy taxpayers is unchanged by the resolution. Applicants must still apply and be investigated before work is allotted.

Local relief to shift toward private jobs control

The speaker warns of a coming upheaval in unemployment relief moving control to local authorities chosen by communities. Relief may become less attractive and the unemployed could resent changes. The aim is to boost private employment so public relief can be cut back significantly.

Motion to form committee on salaried town planner

A nearly defeated motion calls for appointing a committee to study the feasibility of a salaried official directing efforts to attract new industries and residents. The panel will report at the next financial town meeting and compare other communities experiences to help taxpayers decide if this is a viable way to place the unemployed in private plants and rehabilitate the town.

Edward L. Leahy

Why appoint a outsider for this work

The speaker notes that an experienced outsider is needed for this work as no suitable local man exists. They argue a well recommended stranger could gain more progress with Aristolians than a familiar hometown figure, and reference the old saying about a prophet not being known in his own country.
