Qualities of Magnet Explained by Science
The coast and geodetic survey states every magnet has two kinds of magnetism with opposing effects. When hung to turn freely, a magnet nearby will attract one end of the suspended magnet and repel the other. The earth acts as a permanent magnet guiding a suspended magnet to a definite position based on local magnetism. The end pointing north is called the north seeking pole, distinguishing it from the earth’s north magnetic pole which is opposite in kind. Attraction occurs only between opposite poles.
