Latin in Rome and America A clash over dead language

The article contrasts Latin teaching in Italy and the United States, noting Italy requires translating Virgil and Caesar, while U.S. schools struggle with Latin’s relevance. It cites the Vatican Latin magazine, the Baird Memorial Latin Contest in New York, and Maryland’s increased Latin offerings, then shifts to local politics with a GOP push to fill five town posts and a Democratic slate for town offices.

Thomas Granted Variance To Build Garage

In an unannounced session the zoning board granted Anthony and Mrs. Thomas a variance to construct a filling station on Hope Street between Silver Creek and the old Perry House. Chairman John J. Sylvia said the action followed advice from Town Solicitor Frank L. Martin and after a Supreme Court ruling last week reversed an earlier denial. With the next board meeting not until September, the session was held to avoid delaying the project. Present were three of five members, including Sylvia, Ralph H. Lavers and Frank J. Miseragdino.
