State tennis tournament begins amid hot conditions
A 35 player field started the state singles championship at the Excelsior and YMCA courts under hot but favorable weather. J. D. E. Jones defeated W. W. White Jr. after a three set match, while F. R. Tucker beat E. G. Chaffee and Malcolm G. Chace defeated Tudor Gross. Hale upset H. B. Baker as play advanced toward the second round with several matches still to come.
