Quahog Derby Features Prizes and Steeplechase in Bristol Harbor
The 3rd annual Quahog Derby will be held in Bristol Harbor on August 14 chaired by Lowell I Smith. Innovations include an aquahogers steeplechase and a prize for the prettiest quahog boat. Boats judged by class sizes 14x54, 18x80, and 18x66 inches with 35 hp, 25 hp, and 30 hp. Starting near the freight yard, race along a rectangular course toward the castle and back, with a harbor area note. State Agriculture approves quahogs from polluted East harbor for the steeplechase and shells must be dumped back after the race. Coast Guard permission sought to leave upper harbor, prize valued around $1,000. Three motors donated by Smith's Outboard and a work skiff by J T O'Connell.
