Buttonwood Opening Triggers Narragansett Bay Littleneck Glut
The Buttonwood area opening to shellfishermen floods the market with about 3500 bushels of littlenecks driving prices down from 9 a pound to 8 a pound. Dealers and fishermen blame the sudden surplus and fear further price drops as New York buyers restrict shipments. Officials say the bake season starting mid August could absorb excess supply, and call for closing Buttonwood until absorption is assured.
