The Prudence Island Union Church in Rhode Island marks five years since its founding with steady attendance averaging about 100 each Sunday at 9 15. A dedication exercise to be led by Rev. H D Greetz is planned for next Sunday with the Congregational Church joining in.
The Grand Lodge and three escorting lodges led a corner stone laying watched by six to seven hundred onlookers. Donations and pledge drives built a building fund with over 600 dollars after Labor Day and debt reduced to 450 dollars in bonds. A July 19 dedicating service is planned with August events including a fourth annual concert on August 22.
Susan M Sheple praised for leadership as commandant of the Rhode Island Soldiers Home and Hospital. A committee report from the United Spanish War Veterans at the Providence encampment commends the home’s clean, well cared for conditions and the happy, satisfied veterans. Lettered endorsements from state infirmary and mental hospital superintendents accompany the commendation.
The Rhode Island F O E state convention will convene in this town July 25 and 26 with Judge Edward L. Leahy as banquet toastmaster at the Hotel Belvedere. A state parade, drill exhibition, and luncheon are planned, with Charles A Duquette as Chief Marshal and Anthony Nunes leading local arrangements.
Local students Raymond Makowsky and William J Crowley Jr at Fort Adams camp receive promotions. Makowsky to First Sergeant of Battery H while Crowley to Corporal in the same battalion. Both are in the CMTC program with Makowsky in the white third year course and Crowley in the red second year course.
About 75 members of the State Street M E Church Sunday School enjoyed a Saturday afternoon outing at Dixon's cottage off Colt Drive. They brought basket lunches with watermelon donated by Mr. Dixon, and spent time swimming, games, and other activities under Rev. William C. Darby and teachers. A free supper was announced for Thursday evening at Dixon's shores with transportation provided.
The School Committee awarded bids for painting and repairs at several schools including Byfield Walter and Waldrons, with lowest bids from Macauley 510 LeClair 520 Dunbar 521 Anderson 525 and Liscomb 70775 for painting. The Waldron Company won metal ceiling work at Byfield 150 and furnace repairs up to 200.
At Thayer's Farm the Bristol Portuguese Independent Band honored Augustino S Fidalgo its leader of five years before his transfer to the Naugatuck plant from the National India Rubber Company. A gold watch was presented as a keynote, then Joseph Depont was introduced as the new director and games followed.
Mr and Mrs Thomas Kenney of Fall River announce the engagement of their daughter Margaret Kenney to Emil L Dubuc son of Mrs Joseph Dubuc of Hope Street The couple are known locally with Miss Kenney in the Planning Dept and Dubuc as foreman of the hand cutting department at the National India Rubber Co.
Bristol D A R chapter hosted a bridge party with 18 tables on Frank line street. Friday prizes were awarded to winners as committee members led by Miss Alice Almy and Mrs Albert G Earle organized the event.
A daughter was born on July 10 at Truesdale Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. John H. Megathlin of Hope Street in this town.

St Elizabeth's Church observed the feast of its patron with a solemn high mass at 10 30 led by Rev Joseph Amaral. Pastor Rev Francisco G Vieira spoke on the day's significance as church societies joined a procession.
Henry Hambrook Ralph Bennett and Edward Bullock of Bristol have been chosen for the Rhode Island Civilian State Team to compete in the National rifle matches at Camp Perry Ohio from August 23 to September 13. The three Bristol men are also members of the Bristol Train of Artillery marking a notable local distinction.
Friday afternoon a car struck the rear of a slowing truck on an incline near Fort Hill injuring Mrs. John Martin who suffered a deep forehead cut from flying glass. She received three stitches at Dr. Bernardo's office. The truck, owned by Cole Teaming Co of Providence, was driven by Edward A. Brown of East Providence.
