Firecracker Sparks Riot At July Parade

A Fourth of July parade in Hope and Burton Streets halted as a single firecracker sparked a riot. Hundreds of youths hurled bottles at police who used tear gas and riot gear. two officers and several bystanders were injured and eleven arrests followed. The disturbance shorted two parade divisions, detouring the route. Police planned heavy presence, but Guard traffic duties and late arrival reduced enforcement. Witnesses reported crowds forming early and growing disturbances around 11 am, with some dispersing by 11:30 as officers intervened.
