Contributions over the weekend raise Bristol 1950 March of Dimes fund to 577.65 with a goal to top the year’s collection. Albert Means notes the 15 day drive ends today and a third annual auction at Colt Memorial High School will close the drive with a fun and fundraising event.
Four of seven Bristol Twilight League governors submitted resignations to Carl Carlson secretary of the board of recreation and Edward Holmes chairman. The four named were Salvatore Massano Henry Boat George Outilier and Orlando Brisbane. Holmes said action would wait until the February meeting. Remaining are John Borges treasurer Tindaro Majorano and Joseph H Farrell.
Martin R. Biancuzzo is named director of the fourth annual Gold Medal basketball tournament under Bristol Y athletic committee. The event runs March 13 14 17 and 18 at Andrews Memorial gym with eight teams from Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts. Local all stars join top players from Newport Fall River East Providence and Providence in a fast eight team lineup.
Four Mariner Scouts Carol Benson Ann Carreiro Frances Nero and Marilyn Smith passed the Midshipmite knot requirements at yesterday's Girl Scout Mariner Ship Vigilant meeting. Skipper Watson and Mate Herreshoff were on deck. The crew will voyage to Hodgman Pool in Providence for swimming tests with a rummage sale planned for February.
Goldenroders Girl Scout Troop members discussed a food sale to be held February 17 in the office of the electric company on Hope Street. Troop hopes to contribute foodstuffs and posters to boost interest while scribe Barbara Middleton reported on a quiz game during yesterday afternoon’s meeting.
Frederick S. Bartlett, president of the Bristol Community Fund, reports progress after the 1949 campaign and notes gains in residential and industrial divisions. He cites rising per capita industrial donations from 61 cents in 1946 to $1.59 in 1949 and commends Frederick T. Goff for the residential drive. DeWolf resigns as budget head. Bartlett reelected president with new officers and directors named.
World War II Memorial Committee submitted a progress report on plans for a veterans memorial municipal building. The panel will present preliminary findings to the town council by Feb 1 and may issue additional reports if asked. The winning Harkness and Geddes design cost an estimated 792 442.50 for the building.
A Bristol delegation visits Washington to see new construction including the Pentagon. They meet U S Senator Leahy and view the Senate gallery and the Vice President. The group notes Leahy’s leadership and previews future column follow up.
First Bristoe Troop held Carnival Night in Scout Hall with flags bunting and oaths. Patrols including Bob Cats led by Joseph Vaccaro competed for points with Black Hawks and Flaming Arrows as games and refreshments filled the event. Plans for reregistration, Boy Scout Week, Prep Night, and an indoor circus on Feb. 20 were announced, led by junior staff head William Enos.
Past President Edward J. Fitz gerald, superintendent of schools, will address the Rotary Club at noon tomorrow at the White Rail. He will discuss the need for additional school facilities in the north section of town.
