January Blizzard Paralyses Atlantic Coast Rail and Ports

A major January blizzard and gale devastated the Atlantic coast. It shut down rail and electric lines for over 24 hours, trapped vessels, and caused widespread frost and tidal damage from Boston to Provincetown. Boston reported heavy snowfall and high tides, with shipping disruption on Narragansett Bay and a standstill at New York ports. The storm also disrupted theatre attendance, while a cold wave and related illnesses were noted in the south.

Posey Jones Wins Newport Line Ferry Contract

The Posey and Jones company of Wilmington Delaware secured the contract from President Edward A Brown of the Newport and Providence Hallway company to build a steel ferryboat for service between this place and Bristol Ferry. The vessel will be shorter than the Beavertail and resemble the Conanicut, drawing six feet of water with a speed to handle bay crossing in varied weather. Delivery is planned for next June.
