In a Rotary talk Morton Giles recounted three years in Jamaica with Mrs. Giles. He described the Rathfariland exhibit, dramatic veranda staging, and encounters with the Rathfari while noting the peril and vivid jungle atmosphere observed during a field day style visit.
The town council tabled a petition signed by 21 contractors opposing active inspector John P. Lageiro and voted to appoint a committee by the next meeting to study and submit a new building code. The council approved distributing the code to the new committee and heard from speakers for the protesters.
Judy Bullock and John Pasqual were named Girl of the Year and Boy of the Year at the YMCA meeting after being selected from monthly winners over the past year. Charles M Lewis shared a wartime prisoner account from Santo Tomas with the audience at Rockwell Hall.
Edward J. Fitzgerald superintendent of schools praises the March of Dimes campaign in schools for polio fund drives. He says the effort teaches citizenship, reduces fear, and gives students experience in public speaking writing and poster making while fostering unity free of prejudice.
The Bristol YMCA honored Charles B. Rockwell with the 1953 Outstanding Citizen award at the 90th annual meeting. He was cited for civic service including chairing the Bristol school committee 1927 to 1941 and contributions to Rockwell School and Rockwell Park.
The Phoenix earned third place in best feature story at the NEWPA contest in Boston. R S Bosworth Jr was elected a Rhode Island director for a two year term, joining Zeimor Levin on the board.
Bristol marks a polio fund drive climax with a Mothers March Thursday 7 to 8 p m and tag days Friday and Saturday. Volunteers door to door and college pupils aid, with milk can containers by James Sullivan and James Gromling supplies. hot chocolate for workers.
A letter from Bristol recalls the loss of a 5 year old to polio and urges support for the March of Dimes fund raising. It praises the Foundation for aid and encouragement and asks mothers to participate in a Victory March to fund vaccines and future prevention.
Fire Chief Rishe advised residents not to fear a blaze Thursday night as sirens signal the start of the Mothers' March on polio. He urged firemen and citizens to respond by turning on porch lights and then contributing from their pocketbooks.
