Colt Memorial High School Gift Advances Bristol History
A Bristol town history notes a 1905 offer by Col Samuel Colt to fund a new high school building with 40 000 dollars. The town accepted, formed a building committee, and set site choices at Hope and Bradford streets and other locations as Colt’s wishes guided the project. Land condemnation laws and a 1906 General Law adjusted how the town could acquire land for the school. The article continues on page four.

Lincoln and the Sleeping Sentinel tale told by Chittenden
L E Chittenden recalls his role as Lincoln era Register of the Treasury in exposing the Lincoln and the Sleeping Sentinel story. He recounts how 21-year-old Scott, waning under fatigue, faced a firing squad but earned clemency after Lincoln, in a humane exchange, forgave the debt of life and implied Scott must keep his vow to duty. Scott then becomes famed for courage, service, and nursing comrades, volunteering for perilous tasks.
