Ike Eisenhower paints at White House recalls Mamie bow portrait
Ike Eisenhower enjoys painting as a relaxing hobby after World War II days at Fort Myer and later in the White House. Mamie recalls his portrait of Mamie with a pink bow hair ribbon and notes he often tears and restarts when not satisfied. A New York artist friend, Thomas Stephens, lent materials and now holds the first portrait as a prized piece for posterity. Stephens says Ike is a natural realist in oils and could have made a living if he pursued art. Mamie says he prefers oils for easy corrections and recalls a portrait of General Tony Biddle that began as a tree.
