Federal Judge Edward L Leahy endorsed the Feb 25 charter election and urged Bristolians to examine reforms without politics. He told about 100 firemen not to be swayed by slurs and to consider changes on their merits, urging a fair minded, non partisan, cooperative approach.
Bristol hosts March of Dimes tag days on Friday and Saturday with Anthony E. Agatiello as chair of the sub committee. Local funds stood at 713.10 by Friday night including 226.04 from U S Rubber Co employees and 6.97 from March of Dimes cards mailed earlier. Julio F. Xavier reports about 250 responses from 1000 cards sent. more funds likely from other plants and iron lung box donations. The drive concludes with an auction at Colt Memorial High School Auditorium on January 31 at 8 p m.
The Bristol County Camera Club hosts an open house tonight at 8 p m in the Guiteras House. Members are urged to bring equipment to participate in a home portraiture demonstration and practice session.
Alfred R. Rego becomes the 13th candidate to file charter papers, the only elected official so far, a Republican School Committee member and head of the school houses subcommittee, who also serves as consul for the Dominican Republic in the area.
Walter W Swanson acting pastor of the First Baptist Church is reported to be doing well after collapsing near the end of Sunday worship. Dr Antonio F DAnglo provided emergency care and Swanson was rushed to Roger Williams General Hospital by Colt Memorial Ambulance.
Bristol volunteers announce plans for an old fashioned Fourth of July muster. Officers return from a New England league meeting in North Andover Massachusetts and expect official sanction at the league’s May session. Nine Bristol firemen attended representing two veteran groups with chiefs and captains named among delegates.
Albert F. Means, secretary of the local Y, presented awards for over 30 years of service. Charles B. Rockwell and John G. Stewart accepted, with Stewart absent due to illness. Rockwell praised serving on the board as others named Cornell and Haxén as fellow directors.
Nearly fifty Air Force reserve officers and airmen will join Flight B of the 9275th Squadron in Bristol County under Major Albert W Pearson. The unit, part of the 9056th Volunteer Air Reserve Training Group, will meet weekly at the Bristol Train of Artillery armory.
Colt faces East Greenwich High in a 8 PM return game after a Friday loss. East Greenwich despite a 2 3 record has troubled league leaders and beat North Kingstown 56 28. Jayvee games precede the varsity at 7 PM.
The town splits the second represented district into two districts to ease Reynolds School voting congestion. Northside voters gain a separate polling area while the first district remains, with rules limiting polling at one site to 2400. The change follows Board of Canvassers plans and a forthcoming bipartisan canvass of districts.
Wilfred Hamill received the Outstanding Citizen’s Award at the 8th annual Bristol YMCA dinner and meeting marking the organization’s century in the country. Roswell S. Bosworth was re elected president with fellow officers and directors also chosen.
Last Wednesday the Mount Carmel Hornets and Bees varsity teams defeated Holy Name club from Providence with 69 to 42 and 37 to 20 respectively. Jo Jo Russo led the local attack with 26 points, while Babe Ferara added 13 points.
