Boilers Fail in Valley School Basement

A Providence boiler inspector found two coal burning boilers in the Valley School basement badly corroded so that a hammer pierced their shells with little effort. To avoid interrupting sessions, the Committee on School Houses rented a portable boiler from Callan Construction, placed on the common behind the school and connected to the heating system. Bids are sought for two new boilers, but heating will continue with the temporary unit for a month or more. The portable boiler heated the school well despite a cold, blustery day, highlighting that boiler inspections should occur in summer when school is out.
